The Jura family has owned Castrum Battibarani since 1898. Their presence in Basilicata, between Castronuovo di Sant’Andrea and Chiaromonte, dates back to the late 15th century.
Originally purchased by the sons of Prefect Giovanni di Giura, the estate was eventually inherited by Gerardo and Ludovico Nicola. At the time, it included a 16th-century fortified farmhouse (Torre Albineta), nine additional farmhouses, and a chapel dedicated to St. Andrea Avellino.
Ludovico Luigi Nicola di Giura, a medical officer in the Italian Navy, embarked on numerous global expeditions, including a significant one to China in 1900 aboard the Ettore Fieramosca. Over the next 30 years, he thrived in China, serving as a distinguished physician, diplomat and cultural bridge between East and West. He was granted access to the Forbidden City, was close to the Imperial Court, and was personal physician to Empress Cixi and the last Emperor Pu Yi. It wasn’t until 1931 that he returned to his homeland.
The estate later passed to Baron Giovanni di Giura, a diplomat and passionate naturalist who established the Rural School. Recognizing the challenges faced by rural communities, he modernized the farms and built new ones.
Today, the Torre Albineta Farm is under the care of Lavinia di Giura Lucifero, daughter of Fabrizio di Giura Marquis of Battifarano. She is committed to its continued prosperity while honoring its rich history and traditions.
